TRANSCENDING BOUNDARIES

Marion Grant’s art brings together disparate elements of modern life and strands of art movements to express visions and ideas that reflect our present state while referencing spiritual traditions that are centuries old but still influence us today. Like a global traveller, she ‘travels’ among images and texts from around the world, in much the same way that Pop artists sourced themselves from the wealth of media imagery that was available to them in the 1960’s. Much like collage art, which was initiated around the time of Cubism and persisted throughout the 20th century to the present, Marion juxtaposes her images, sometimes only a trace or scrap of an idea, layering one upon the other to produce hypnotic tableaux that repay close attention and often reveal themselves only after subsequent viewing. Utilizing the amazing potential offered by the computer and the precision software that allows one to manipulate images and ideas, she produces brilliant digital prints that, more than anything, locate the works in the modern present. But, unlike many artists who are in thrall to computer-generated, almost unnatural imagery, Marion prefers to use ancient religious imagery, text and views of nature to combine into her exquisitely produced, painterly modern digital prints.

ARTIST’S STATEMENT

My goal as an artist is to foster a state-of-mind that reflects our yearning for connection to the infinite. I often incorporate Buddhist and Hindu images because of the profound sense of beauty, serenity and joy that they instill in me. My art affords me the opportunity to share those feelings with others.

My work is characterized by the integration of widely-disparate elements into a harmonious coexistence. Most of my art exhibits an unusual melding of color and texture as well as geometric, floral and typographic forms. My treatment of these elements ranges from the cool and dispassionate to the lush, warm and sensual. Often, all these moods are evoked within a single composition. I take ancient and classical themes and embed them in a contemporary context. Real objects are morphed into abstract and ambiguous forms. Multiple layers are built up, revealing great subtlety and depth.

My art induces a viewing experience akin to visual meditation. As one focuses more intently on the work, the boundaries separating the various elements dissipate and the elements converge to a unified whole. In the depth dimension, the multiple layers act as a series of veils that progressively unfold with time and then reform into a single plane. Simultaneously, the viewer is transposed to higher realms of consciousness and connectivity. I call this process Transcending Boundaries.

BIO

Marion Grant is a fine artist whose work encompasses spiritual, geometrical and botanical themes. Her digital art is distinguished by the layering of photographic elements to create the look of a fine art painting. She has exhibited her work in group and solo shows, most recently at a solo show in Chelsea, New York. Previously, Marion developed a unique series of large-scale, multimedia paintings, comprising silk-screening, gold leaf, patinas and wood constructions. Her paintings were acquired by a number of private and corporate collectors, including Pfizer and Signet Bank. During that period, Marion also created hand-printed, silk-screened artwork for which she received several national awards, including the Grand Prize of the Guild for American Crafts.

In June 2009, two of Marion’s pieces, Eclipse at Benares and 1000 Petals, were chosen for inclusion in the Rauschenberg Tribute Exhibition at the Museum of the Gulf Coast. Entries to this art exhibit were selected by

Susan Davidson, Senior Curator of the Guggenheim Museum in New York. 1000 Petals received a special

mention from Ms. Davidson.

Marion grew up in Long Island, New York and received a BFA from the California College of the Arts.
