BOTANICAL COLLECTIONmariongrant_botanical.html

This category is comprised of Buddhist themes, apart from one work depicting Hindu bathers in the Ganges at Benares during a solar eclipse. The principal focus of these pieces are photographs of Buddhist statues and paintings. These are almost always combined with floral images and many have textual elements related to Buddha’s teachings. There is a circular piece of a Buddha reclining in a Tulip Magnolia petal. Four of the works are accompanied by descriptions of their aesthetics and symbolism as well as the photographic palettes on which they were based.

This collection features two works based on the Tulip Magnolia (Tulip Magnolia and Inscriptions) and three based on a variety of orchids. The unfolding of the petals of these sublime flora mimics the layer unwrapping that is characteristic of Marion’s art. Both Tulip Magnolia and Inscriptions feature a harmonious interplay of lines, rectangles and spirals overlaid by typographic elements. Orchid Fresco sets off the Phalaenopsis orchid (a.k.a. Moth Orchid) against a fresco background. Orchid Angelica emulates the sweep and grace of an angel’s wings while a close-up, Emergence, evokes birth and renewal.

GALLERIES

This collection consists of four pieces. Circadian Gold is an assemblage of gold and brown spirals. Typography comprises multiple rectangular elements overlaid by alphabetical characters in various fonts. The fonts are tied together in a manner that references their history and evolution. Both Circadian Gold and Typography are available individually or as triptychs. Vignette is a glimpse of a Chelsea brownstone as viewed through a window with iron scrollwork. Squares is a collection of nested squares in three color variations.
